Gemma's sugars have been stable for the last week, which we are extremely excited about.
When she came out of hospital, she had two days of good sugars and we were able to relax, but then they dipped again. We gave Gemma's encocrinologist in Cape Town, a call, and we once again talked of surgery, or trying out Octreotide (the insulin suppressing injections) etc. We have made a provisional booking to see her in Mid July. She did suggest that maybe we should try and play around with her diet. The following day we put Gemma back onto Frebini's and that is when her sugars starting stabilising. The change has been dramatic, and the stress levels in our family have decreased ten fold. I was disappointed when, after trying to get advice from another doctor, he said that we were focusing so much on her eating to the detriment of her blood sugars. My initial reaction was that this statement wasn't true, but I have since given it much thought, and it is exactly true. The foods we were giving her were completely wrong and were causing her sugars to spike and then fall rapidly. The low GI diet is not working for us at this stage. I completely understand the concept now, but the fight and stess to get Gemma to eat is not worth it at this stage. When she is ready we will give it another go. We have decided to stick to a Frebini's. We still give her Tasty Wheat for breakfast, and then Frebini's throughout the day, until Yoghurt with Maizena at bedtime. We have found by giving her the Frebini's she is much more willing to try and pick at certain foods throughout the day. I did feel that we were going a few steps backwards, since coming back from Austria, but not anymore. She is still taking all feeds orally so that is fantastic. She still drinks mostly through a syringe, but every now and then will drink a Frebini with a straw, so that is actually a few steps forward. We pray that her sugars continue as they are. Please keep Jason and his parents Jill and Bruce in your prayers, as well as Tayden and his parents Brene and Robert.
