Gemma came out of hospital on her 5th birthday (8th of September), last year. We reached her 6th birthday without a single hospital visit. Although her little body shows the scars of a traumatic 5 year period, the worst really seems to be over, and for this we are truly grateful.
We saw her endocrinologist at the end of July and he did a HbA1C (hemoglobin) test on her. It sounds complicated, but all it is, is a finger prick test, which gives you a an average result of your blood sugar over a 3 to 6 month period. The normal level is less than 6%. Most people with diabetes should aim for an HbA1C of less than 7%. Gemma's result was 6.5%. At this stage, there is nothing we can do, but try and control her carbohydrate intake. If this average moves closer to 7%, he will then advise a solution, whether it be insulin or an oral tablet that type 2 diabetics take. We will be keeping a check on this level every 6 months. For all the South Africans reading this, there is a photo of Gemma and her pet donkey (Chester) in the October Country life magazine in the article Sky High. Bryce is doing very well. He keeps everyone giggling with his wierd and wonderful expressions and one-liners. Gemma and Bryce are becoming real friends, and it is great to be able to be a part of their growing up together. We are glad that the winter is over, and hope that everyone has a wonderful summer ahead.
