Our second miracle baby
Having previously mentioned our second baby, we thought we would share Bryce's story with you. The second pregnancy went very well ,and although we didn't do any genetic testing, we had our ups and downs about whether the baby would have HI or not, we remained positive throughout.
Bryce was due on the 26th of December 2008. We live in Lesotho, but chose to have both our babies in Bloemfontein, South Africa. After our trip to London we stayed in Bloem waiting for Bryce to arrive. We stay in a flat 100m away from the Medi-Clinic, you can see it from the upstairs window. On the morning of the 4th of January I went into labour, and decided to go have a bath before going to hospital. Whilst in the bath I felt this very strange popping sensation, followed by an extremely intense pain. I definitely knew something was going to happen.
Gemma had had a bad night the previous night, and Michael was trying to put her to sleep by playing some soothing music. I called to him to help me out the bath, and told him to phone somebody immediately for help. Without thinking, he did so, and carried on putting Gemma to sleep. He was slightly oblivious as to what was about to happen.
I managed to get myself onto our bed, and called to Michael that the baby was coming. He calmly replied that he knew, and that he was getting my bags ready to take to hospital. He came into the room, and at that same time I had the sudden urge to push and there was absolutely no stopping. I told him the baby was here, and as he came towards me, Bryce's head was out. Michael calmly put his hands under Bryce's head and as I pushed he delivered Bryce and put him on my chest. In a very calm panic he managed to phone the hospital and get advice on how to tie the ambilical cord. He also managed to call the ambulance, who arrived 30 minutes later to do the rest.
My mother and sister arrived about two minutes after Bryce was born, and as we had kept his sex a surprise, asked what the baby was. We still did not know. as Michael had literally laid him down without checking. My sister turned him over and anounced he was a boy.
The ironic thing about our beautiful home birth was that we had to admit Bryce into ICU for so they could monitor his blood sugars. After 5 days of testing, he was anounced HI free. We sent his blood in for testing anyway, and found that he is a carrier of the condition, but this does not affect his health.
