February was a very good month for Gemma. Her progress has been amazing. She has been asking for vanilla milkshake (Nutrishake - a very well balanced formula), first thing in the morning. She drinks about 100mls of it on her own, without needing added help with a syringe. She eats a big bowl of porridge for breakfast, we alternate between Jungle Oats and Taystee Wheat. She has two chewable vitamens (it helps that Bryce loves to eat his, so I the only way Gemma eats hers, is by a bit of a competition "who can finish theirs first?") She doesn't like the "orange" one so much, so I have taught her that she must save the best one for last. This has also helped a bit. Breakfast is not a struggle any more.
She has taken a liking to egg, so about half an hour before she needs to drink Frebini, I make her and Bryce egg of some sorts for lunch. She has a few mouthfulls (luckily Bryce loves eggie.) She still needs to have the Frebini with her lunch because protein on its own does nothing for her blood sugars. The Frebini is also one meal we know that keeps her blood sugars stable for 3 hours, so it gives us a bit of a break. Also, if she falls asleep after lunch, at least we don't have to wake her up after half an hour. On that note, I am actually currently in Bloemfontein, attending a travel show to promote the lodge. On Michael's insistance I came alone, and he is at home looking after Gems and Bryce. I miss them (and Michael) like crazy, but I know they are having loads of fun with their daddy. Shortly after I last blogged, we used Gemma's monitor to see her blood sugar patterns when she was having lows. We don't feel it necessary anymore to use it on a daily basis, but it is very useful when she goes through extensive periods (a few days) of having lows. On the 18th of February, we were honoured that Gemma was chosen to represent "Ek is n Ster," a charity started by Marlene Jooste of Bloemfontein, at a launch of a beauty product "Derma Puur." Gemma and another little girl, Nthabiseng, received their dream gifts. Gemma received a swing set, a little keyboard, and a "Kiddy Buddy rocking Giraffe." I will try put photo's up ASAP. She and Nthabiseng had dresses made for them and they both looked like princesses. Thank you to Marlene for inviting Gemma and all those that sponsored her gifts. Gemma received her school uniform yesterday, made by a lady in the village. She was so excited that she wore it the entire day. She went to play with her friend, Libuseng, in the village yesterday afternoon, and when I went to fetch her she was wearing Libuseng's clothes, whilst her uniform had been washed by Libuseng's older sister. Gemma is slowly learning a few Sesotho words by going to the pre-school. Bryce is developing a very strong willed personality. He wants to do everything by himself. At two years and two months he is potty trained (besides sleep time), and he can have an almost full conversation with you. They both seem to be growing up so quickly.......but I guess that's what happens. February has been a month of very little news equals very good news. We hope you
